Spring Sunshine Baseball League Final Standings!
May 27, 2010

We are excited to announce the final results for the Spring 2010 Sunshine Baseball League. In nearly every age group and division the competition was very close and literally came down to one or two games. What makes Sunshine League tournaments so exciting is teams are often not only playing for tournament championships; their games have Sunshine League championship implications as well. With Slug-A-Rama being the last tournament of the Spring season, many teams used that event to leapfrog other teams in the final standings while other teams used that event to cement their place at the top of the standings. And the best part about the Sunshine League is that every game matters. Something teams frequently don’t realize is that even a laid back Sunday double header can be the determining factor in finishing 1st or 2nd.

The final standings are based on overall record, points, strength of schedule and your record against the other top teams in your division. All of the following teams mentioned will be honored at our annual Sunshine Baseball Awards Banquet. This event is held every January at the Rosen Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando. And the best part about next year’s banquet is the league champions in the Platinum and Gold divisions receive championship rings! Every team that finished in the top 3 in their divisions will receive awards at the banquet and this year we will also be honoring the Sunshine Fab 5 in every age group. Fab 5 recognition goes to the top 5 teams in every age group in total points. Congratulations to all of our teams that finished at the top!

The 9:U Platinum Championship Rings will be going to the Clearwater Dragons. After finishing 2nd in the Fall League, the Clearwater Dragons have worked themselves into the top spot in the 9:U age group. The Clearwater Dragons won the Platinum division by going 16-8 this season, winning March Madness and getting 2nd place at Slug-A-Rama. Finishing second in the 9:U Platinum division is the Tampa Bay Bulls. The Tampa Bay Bulls finished the season 12-5, they scored 165 points, and they got 1st place at the President’s Day Challenge. Rounding out the top of the 9:U Platinum standings is the Tampa Bay Rawlings Bulldogs.

The 9:U Gold Champions are the Spartans (Tampa). The Spartans finished the season 12-7 and they scored 251 points. The Spartans got 3rd place at the March Madness and they finished in 4th place at Slug-A-Rama. The Wesley Chapel Storm finished the season in 2nd place in the Gold division. Although the Storm went 11-14 this season, they played their best when they were at tournaments. The Storm got 2nd place at March Madness and they finished 3rd at Slug-A-Rama. Another team to note in the 9:U age group is the Red Raiders. The Red Raiders finished the season with 338 points, the most in the 9:U age group. The Red Raiders will be honored at the banquet as part of the Sunshine Fab 5.

From start to finish the 10:U Platinum age group was dominated by the West Florida Young Guns. The Young Guns left no doubt which team deserved the championships rings as they won every tournament of the Sunshine Season. The Young Guns won the President’s Day Challenge, March Madness (in the 11u age group!), Slug-A-Rama, Meteors Tournament of Champions and the Duel at Daytona. The Young Guns also accumulated 643 points, more than any team in the Sunshine League regardless of age. The Tampa Bay Bulls finished the season in 2nd place in the Platinum Division. The Bulls had an impressive 14-6 record this season and they scored 266 points. The Bullets finished 3rd in the Platinum Division. The Bullets only scored 74 points this season because they only played in one tournament, but they still secured a 3rd place finish by finishing with a 12-5 record and a 70% winning percentage. Another team worth noting is the Lakewood Ranch Gators. The Lakewood Ranch Gators finished the season with 295 total points. The Gators will also be honored at this year’s Awards Banquet as part of the Sunshine Fab 5. The Gators took the extra challenge this season of playing in the open-base Platinum division after playing in the Gold division last season. By playing against the best competition all year and backing down from nobody, the Gators have improved significantly. It will be interesting to see how they play next season in the 11u age group since all teams will be playing open base. There is no doubt they have passed up many teams this season.

In the 10u Gold division, the St. Pete Saints ran away with the championship rings as they went 22-3. The Saints won the Gold division in the Presidents Day Challenge and the Slug-A-Rama. They also won the Platinum Division at March Madness. The Saints have proven themselves to be one of the best 10u teams in the state and they have certainly earned Platinum status for the Fall season. Finishing 2nd in the 10u Gold division is the Tampa Blades. The Tampa Blades finished the season with an outstanding 14-4 record. In the 10u Gold division there was a tie for 3rd place. The Rawlings Rush and the Wesley Chapel Wildcats were both two of the toughest teams in the Gold division all season. The Rawlings Rush finished 2nd in the Gold division at the Presidents Day Challenge and March Madness. They also finished 5th at Slug-A-Rama. The Wesley Chapel Wildcats finished 3rd at the President’s Day Challenge, finished 5th in the Platinum division at the March Madness, and 4th in the Gold division at Slug-A-Rama. The two teams played so well all season and were so evenly matched all year, we decided they both deserved 3rd place honors. The two teams were 1-1 against each other this season.

The 11:U Platinum division championship rings will be going to the Tampa Bay Bulls 11u. The Tampa Bay Bulls went 10-6 this year, giving them a 62% winning percentage. They did not win any tournaments this season but they played strong enough in their double headers and tournaments that they still produced a good record and deserved 1st place in the 11:U Platinum division. The Bulls finished 3rd in March Madness (Platinum) and 4th at the President’s Day Challenge. Finishing 2nd in the 11:U Platinum division is the All Star Bombers. The All Star Bombers went 14-5 this season and finished 3rd at the Meteors’ Tournament.

The 11:U Gold division was the closest division in the entire Sunshine League. The team that finished the season at the top of the division was the Palatka Panthers. The Palatka Panthers finished the season with an 11-7 record and 219 points. The Panthers finished 4th at the Duel at Daytona and they earned their Championship Rings at Slug-A-Rama when they finished in 1st place in the Platinum division. Finishing second in the 11:U Gold division was the Red Raiders. The Red Raiders accumulated an impressive 417 point total after finishing 3rd at the Presidents Day Challenge, 2nd at March Madness and 2nd at Slug-A-Rama; all 3 in the Platinum Division. WCP Baseball finished the season in 3rd place in the Gold division. WCP finished with 297 points and the highlight of their season was a 2nd Place finish at March Madness (Gold Division). The reason the 11:U Gold division was so close was because entering Sunday’s elimination play at Slug-A-Rama, all three of the teams in the top 3 had a chance to secure the league championship with a 1st place finish.

The 12:U Platinum division champions are Chet Lemon’s Juice. The Juice finished the season undefeated as they won every tournament they entered. They won the Platinum division championship in the President’s Day Challenge, Slug-A-Rama and the Meteors’ Tournament of Champions. The Juice walked away with the 12:U Platinum division championship as they only played a few close games all season.

The 12:U Gold championship rings will be going to the Red Raiders. The Red Raiders finished the season with a 12-1-2 record and they racked up 305 points. The Red Raiders won the March Madness tournament and finished 2nd at Slug-A-Rama. Their only loss of the season was at the hands of the Juice. Finishing second in the Gold division is the Tampa Bay Barracudas. The Barracudas finished the year with an 8-8 record and they scored 383 points. The Barracudas finished 3rd at the President’s Day Challenge, 3rd at March Madness and 4th at Slug-A-Rama.

For years the Meteors have been one of the best teams in the Sunshine League and once again they won the Platinum division in their age group. The Meteors have established themselves as one of the top teams in the entire nation. They finished the season undefeated and the only blemish on their schedule was a 3-3 tie against Gators Baseball at March Madness. The Meteors won all three double point events this season. Finishing 2nd in the 13:U Platinum division is the Tampa Titans Elite. The Tampa Titans compiled 317 points this season by finishing 4th at the President’s Day Challenge (Platinum), 3rd at March Madness (Gold) and winning Slug-A-Rama in the Gold Division.

The Bullets Grey dominated the Gold division this Spring with a 21-5 record. The Bullets Grey put together an impressive Spring resume as they finished 3rd at President’s Day (Platinum), 1st at March Madness (Gold), 2nd at Slug-A-Rama (Platinum) and they won the Meteors’ Tournament (Platinum). The Bullets Grey continue to improve and have become one of the elite teams in the state. There is no doubt they earned Platinum status for the Fall season. They enter this weekend’s state championship as the #2 overall seed. The Bullets Black finished the season as 2nd place in the Gold division. Bullets Black earned their 2nd place finish with a 10-9 record and 286 points on the season. Bullets White completes the Bullets Baseball sweep of the 13:U Gold division by finishing 3rd place. Bullets White compiled a 10-6 record and totaled 165 points this season.

After winning every tournament they entered this season the Florida Flash have claimed the top spot in the 14:U Platinum Division. The Florida Flash finished the year with a 13-1 record and a total of 399 points. The Flash won the March Madness, Slug-A-Rama and the Meteors’ Tournament of Champions. The team that finished second in the Platinum division is Gunslinger Baseball. The Gunslingers finished this season with a record of 11-5. They also scored 451 points; the most in the 14:U age group. The Gunslingers finished 5th at the President’s Day Challenge, 3rd at March Madness, 2nd at Slug-A-Rama and 4th at the Meteors’ tournament. The final team standing on the 14:U Platinum podium is the Sidewinders Baseball Club. The Sidewinders finished this season with 405 points after playing very solid in all three double point events. In all three events they made it to the semi-final game. The Sidewinders finished 3rd at President’s Day, 4th at March Madness and 4th at Slug-A-Rama.

Last but not least, the 14:U Gold championship rings will be going to the Sebring Streaks. The Sebring Streaks finished the season 14-4, giving them a 63% winning percentage. The Streaks also accumulated 114 points. The Golden Gate Hammerheads finish the Spring Season at 2nd place in the Gold division. The Golden Gate Hammerheads put together an incredible 14-2-3 record and they scored 76 points. If the Golden Gate Hammerheads performed well at one more event this spring they could have easily challenged the Streaks for the top spot in the Gold division. Rounding out the final 14:U Gold standings is the Brandon Panthers. The Panthers finish the season with 191 points. They finished 6th at the President’s Day Challenge, 6th at March Madness (Gold) and 5th at Slug-A-Rama (Gold).

Congratulations to all of the teams mentioned above. We look forward to honoring these teams next January at our Annual Awards Banquet!
